The ISPCC today welcomed the publication of the Heads of Bill for Children First by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Francis Fitzgerald. The purpose of this Bill is to put Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children on a statutory footing.

 

Staff and Customers of Elverys Sports raise a fantastic €60,000 for the ISPCC

Today, in Mayo, the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) launches the findings of a child protection survey carried out locally. 385 members of the community in the West participated in the study. Findings indicate that the general public feel unsure and uninformed when it comes to the issue of child protection and what to do if concerned about a child.

The ISPCC today responded to the sentencing of a mother for the on-going and severe neglect of her five children. This sentence does not reflect the severity of the crime and the total unacceptability of child abuse.

The recent case of the horrific abuse inflicted on a ten month old baby, highlights the fact that abuse is not just an historical event but a current issue that needs to be addressed if we are to ensure that children are protected.

Today the ISPCC’s Leanbh service launches its 2011 annual statistics. The service which works in Dublin supporting children at risk of begging has seen a huge decrease in the number of sightings and incidences of children begging on the streets.
