Monaghan CAC In Cross-Border Collaboration With IncredABLE Youth

Young people from Monaghan joined forces with some of their County Armagh peers recently for a high-energy cross-border event funded by the Monaghan County Council PEACE IV local authority action plan and led by Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board in association with the ISPCC. •

Members of the ISPCC’s Children’s Advisory Committee, Monaghan, came together with members of the IncredABLE Together Youth Group, based at Keady, Co. Armagh, for an evening designed to help enhance children and young people’s capacity to build positive relationships with people of other backgrounds. The project was supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programme Body (SEPUB). •

Kathryn McAree of the ISPCC and lifestyle coach Pamela Treanor of ‘Train with a Treanor’ led the event at the Tommy Makem Arts and Community Centre, Keady, which saw participants enjoy a pulsating exercise routine complete with drumsticks and rock music. Pamela also told those gathered about how living with a heart condition and having a pacemaker fitted couldn’t stop her from reaching her goals and living life to the full. •

Kathryn McAree said: “Research has highlighted that, from an early age, children internalise the cultural and political views of their own community. This can lead to division and an absence of trust passing from one generation to the next. In line with funding allocated by the Peace IV Programme, this event was designed to support children and young people in building their capacity to form positive and effective relationships with others of different backgrounds and contribute to building a cohesive society. •

“Both the ISPCC’s Children’s Advisory Committee and IncredABLE Youth Group create meaningful opportunities for young people, helping them to build confidence and become active citizens. IncredABLE offers young people with a learning / intellectual disability and / or autism a wide range of social opportunities and activities in a supportive and positive environment. A ‘Pound’ session was the perfect way to have fun while exercising in a social setting, with no barriers to involvement.”
