On 10 November 2012, the people of Ireland voted to strengthen children’s rights in the highest law of our land – the Irish Constitution. Barnardos, the Children’s Rights Alliance and the ISPCC worked together to campaign for a ‘Yes’ vote in that referendum. It was a landmark victory because by voting yes, the country had pledged to always put children first.
Fast forward five years, this conference will ask some important questions. Have children’s lives improved since the referendum? How has this constitutional change been interpreted by legal powers-that-be? What do we still need to do to make the courts and justice system a less intimidating place for children? How can we make sure children’s opinions are taken into account in public and private law proceedings?
