Shield My School / Club Self-Evaluation Tool
This is an evidence-informed resource to allow schools to evaluate their management of bullying. By completing the tool schools will have a clearer understanding of where their strengths are with regard to effective management of bullying, however it will also clearly identify areas for improvement. By the end of the self –evaluation process schools will have developed a clear plan of action based on their identified needs. 
What types of schools can use Shield My School Self –Evaluation Tool?
The Shield My School Tool has been used by a variety of schools including primary , post-primary and Youthreaches. To date over 240 schools have used it.
Benefits of using Shield My School Self –Evaluation Tool
By completing the ISPCC Shield My School self-evaluation tool you are taking positive steps to protect your students from bullying and demonstrating a commitment to an evidence-informed approach to the management of bullying.
By completing the self-evaluation tool you will be able to identify your school’s strengths in terms of the management of bullying; but the process will also identify areas for improvement. In the long run this self-evaluation tool should be effective in reducing the incidences of bullying in schools and will hopefully free up more time for teachers to concentrate on teaching as opposed to resolving and addressing issues around bullying.
The self-evaluation tool will take a minimum of two hours for schools to complete.

The ISPCC can come into your school and talk to your students, teachers, parents or guardians but we ask that schools first complete the self-evaluation tool so that we can be aware of the identified needs, and thus be better able to tailor a unique presentation to meet these needs.

  • Is there a cost involved?
No! All resources produced by the ISPCC Shield Programme are provided to the school completely free of charge. Any follow-up talks to students, parents/guardians and/or teachers completed by the ISPCC are also free.
*      We already have an anti-bullying policy so why should we use the self–evaluation tool?
Having a policy is a good start but the Shield My School tool will evaluate the actual effectiveness of your school’s policy. Additionally, having an effective approach to bullying is more than just a policy. Key preventative initiatives that are proven to help reduce and prevent bullying in the first place and other key areas around best practice and management are examined, e.g. building resilience and self-esteem in young people, building assertiveness skills, promoting a culture of inclusivity and diversity within your school.
*    The students here are only young, why should we get involved?
Domineering and controlling behaviour can begin at an early age and it is crucial that this is addressed as early as possible.
*      We don’t have bullying in our school, why should we get involved?
There is the potential for bullying to happen in every school.
We also know that not all young people will come forward to report that they are being bullied or indeed if they observe bullying happening they may not report their concerns.
Where schools feel they are managing the issue well already, they should find this self-evaluation tool a positive way of acknowledging and recognising the effective work that is already happening on a daily basis within the school.
*      If we raise this issue will it make parents/guardians and others in the community think we have a problem with bullying?
On the contrary, by using the self-evaluation tool your school is showing that your school is committed and open to learning new skills and ideas in order to combat bullying. Schools that take part in the programme are focused on implementing an effective, proactive, evidence informed and preventative approach to bullying and  are demonstrating that the welfare and safety of students is a key priority.
*      How can we have a bullying policy to cover everything the children or parents/guardians call bullying these days?
Being clear on what is bullying and what bullying isn’t is a crucial step. It is not enough that teachers or school management create a definition – parents/guardians and students also need to be clear on this definition and they also need an opportunity to have input into this process. This is a key issue covered by this self-evaluation tool. All parties (students, parents/guardians, teachers, S.N.A.s etc.) need to be consulted with and agree upon a clear definition on what is and what is not bullying.
*      Who takes part in the self-evaluation process?
The tool works best if all individuals working within the school environment are involved, including those responsible for supervision outside of the classroom. It is essential that the self-evaluation exercise is fully supported by the person(s) within the school who has overall responsibility for school management, generally the school principal and/or board of management
*      Do students take part in the self-evaluation process?
Students do not take part in the initial two hour self-evaluation process, however having students (as well as parents/guardians and the whole school’s community get involved and participate in the follow-up work is encouraged.
*      Will there be any follow-up work after we complete the self-evaluation tool?
Yes – the actions arising from the Shield My School Self-Evaluation Tool will need to be addressed in the weeks following completion. Some or all staff members will need to be involved in this to ensure all actions are finalised.
*      Does the ISPCC offer any follow up talks to students, parents/guardians or teachers?
Once a school has completed the self-evaluation tool, it will have a clearer view of the school’s strengths in terms of bullying management, but it will also have identified areas of need. The ISPCC can come into your school and talk to your students/teachers/parents/guardians but we ask the schools to first complete the self-evaluation tool so that we can be aware of the identified needs and be better able to tailor a unique presentation to meet these needs.
