Your Question

My son is starting his leaving cert exams soon and he’s getting really anxious. How can I support him without putting pressure on him. I’m not concerned about him getting top marks just that he does his best and he’s not disappointed.

Answer

Hello and welcome

Welcome to our Ask Robyn service, and thank you for reaching out. It is completely understandable to feel concerned when your child is anxious about exams, especially during the Leaving Cert. Many young people experience stress and worry at this time, and it can also be difficult for parents who want to support them in the best possible way.

Reassure him that his wellbeing matters most

It can help young people to hear that their worth is not defined by exam results. Although exams can feel very important, knowing that you value his effort, wellbeing, and happiness above grades may ease some of the pressure he is placing on himself. Sometimes parents worry that saying this will lower motivation, but often it actually helps young people feel calmer and more able to focus.

Create a calm and supportive environment

During exam periods, small things can make a big difference. A calm home environment, regular meals, opportunities for rest, and encouragement to take breaks can all support your son’s wellbeing. In addition, keeping communication open without constantly asking about study progress may help him feel supported rather than monitored.

Things you can try

  • Encourage regular breaks, sleep, exercise, and time away from study to help reduce stress and improve concentration
  • Let him talk about his worries without immediately trying to fix everything, as sometimes feeling listened to can be very reassuring
  • Praise the effort he is making rather than focusing on results or points
  • Help him keep perspective by reminding him that there are many different pathways and opportunities available after the Leaving Cert

Be mindful of disappointment

It is natural for young people to fear disappointment during exams. However, reminding your son that setbacks and challenges are part of life can help build resilience. Knowing that your support will remain the same regardless of results may also reduce some of the anxiety he is carrying.
