Your Question
How can I rebuild a relationship with my child whom I have not raised?
Answer
Hi there, and thank you for contacting Ask Robyn,
You asked how to rebuild a relationship with your child whom you have not raised. We wonder what age your child is now and what your relationship currently looks like.
Rebuilding a relationship will take time and patience. It is important to take a child-centred approach and go at your child’s pace. They may need time and space to get to know you and build trust in you and your relationship.
It may also help to get to know your child’s interests, hobbies, likes, and dislikes. Can you and your child find an activity that you both enjoy participating in? This could help support the process of building your relationship.
Family therapy might also be beneficial, as it can provide a safe and supportive environment to explore your relationship, address past difficulties, and navigate any feelings that arise. This can help both you and your child move forward and build a future together.
If you would like additional support or wish to discuss any of the above further, you can access the ISPCC Support Line Service on 01 522 4300, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.
Childline.ie is also available to your child. They can contact the freephone service on 1800 66 66 66 or chat with us via our webchat service by clicking on the Live Chat Online tab at www.childline.ie.
Best wishes,
Robyn
