Your Question

My child wants to pursue a different career than I had planned for them. How do I support their decision?

Answer

Hi there and thank you for reaching out to Ask Robyn.

It can be quite difficult when your child expresses a desire to pursue a path that differs from the one you envisioned for them. As parents, we might have dreams and expectations for their future, and we often want the best for our children. However, it’s important to recognise that our children are their own individuals and need the space to explore their own passions and interests.

Firstly, it is important to have an open and non-judgemental conversation with your child about why they want to pursue this career. Try to gain an understanding of what excites them about this path and why or how it aligns with their values and goals. This may not be a sign of “rebellion” but rather a sign that they’re developing their own sense of identity and autonomy.

Even though it might be hard to let go of the career path you had imagined for them, it’s important to acknowledge that they have a right to follow their own dreams. Even if you’re unsure about their choice, offering them your support can help them feel empowered. Ask them to think about the steps involved in pursuing this career.

Have open discussions about the pros and cons of their decision. If they’re unsure about how to proceed, help them research the field and explore different educational or training opportunities. This could also be a chance for you to learn more about their interests.

Sometimes it’s helpful to remind your child that career paths can evolve over time, and that it’s okay to change direction as they learn more about themselves. Motivate them to think critically, explore their options, and ensure they have a solid plan for success.
