Your Question
My daughter who is nearly 5 has started flapping her hands. She has just started school and I’m so concerned
Answer
Hello, welcome to Ask Robyn
Thank you for reaching out to us. It’s completely natural to be concerned when you notice new or unexpected behaviours in your child, especially as she begins school and adjusts to new surroundings. Hand-flapping can sometimes seem worrying, but please know that many young children display movements like this, especially when they are excited, overwhelmed, or trying to express emotions they’re not yet able to verbalise.
It’s important to remember that we are not medical professionals here, and each child is different. Hand-flapping, on its own, is not necessarily a sign of any underlying issue. Many children engage in self-soothing behaviours or stimming (self-stimulatory behaviour), especially during times of transition or stress, such as starting school. However, if you feel that this behaviour is frequent or accompanied by other signs of distress, it might be helpful to consult with a healthcare professional or your family doctor.
Seeking professional advice is important, especially if you have any ongoing concerns. A doctor, teacher, or child development expert can provide guidance and support, and help rule out any other potential concerns. They can also offer strategies to help your daughter feel more comfortable during this period of adjustment.
In the meantime, offering her reassurance and creating a calm environment at home may help. School can be a big adjustment for children, and it’s common to see a variety of new behaviours as they adapt to this change. Patience and understanding will go a long way in supporting her as she navigates this new chapter.
