Supporting a large family

Your Question

How do you best support a family with 6 children and the parents need parental role modelling?.

Answer

Hello and welcome to Ask Robyn.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns about supporting a family with six children, especially when the parents are in need of role modelling. It’s clear that you care deeply about the well-being of this family, and it’s important to acknowledge that parenting can be incredibly challenging, particularly with a larger family.

First and foremost, it’s essential to approach this situation with understanding and compassion. Parenting is a demanding job, and it’s not uncommon for parents to need guidance at times. Encouraging the parents to seek out positive role models—whether through friends, extended family, or professional resources—can be a great first step. Role models can offer practical advice, demonstrate effective parenting strategies, and provide emotional support, which can be invaluable for parents who may be feeling overwhelmed.

Furthermore, connecting the family with local support services can make a significant difference. In Ireland, Túsla, the Child and Family Agency, offers various resources and programs specifically designed to support families. They can provide parenting programs, counselling, and other forms of assistance that might help the parents develop their skills and strengthen their family dynamic. These services are designed to empower parents, helping them to better manage the challenges that come with raising children.

Barnardos is another organisation which supports families and children. They have 56 locations around Ireland.

It may also be beneficial to encourage the parents to build a support network within their community. This could involve participating in local parenting groups or connecting with other families who might be facing similar challenges. Sometimes, simply knowing that others are going through the same thing can be a great source of comfort and strength.

Here is a booklet on positive parenting which may be of some help Parents_Parenting_skills_. While this booklet is designed for parenting children from 6 – 12 years, it is just 1 in a serious.
