Volunteering at Christmas: Maria Heeran

Maria Heeran

‘As a volunteer with Childline, it’s powerful when you have a really good engagement with a young person and you feel you have helped to make a difference in their life’

I’ve been volunteering with Childline for 18 months now.

It was something I wanted to do for a long time and once my children had grown up, it was the right time for me.

The chance to support children was the main reason I joined.

I love volunteering – the best thing about it is when you have a really good engagement with a young person and you feel you have helped to make a difference, even if it’s just a small difference in their life.

I volunteered in Christmas Eve 2020 and I’ll be volunteering again on Christmas Eve this year.

To me, it’s important that Childline is there over Christmas because it can be a difficult time of year for children and young people.

They may see pictures of happy families across the media, but, for some, their experience might be quite different.

With thanks to the exceptional dedication of our volunteers like Maria, Childline will be there for every child and young person in Ireland every day and night this Christmas season.

All service details can be found at Childline.ie.

Childline relies on donations for 75 per cent of the funding which keeps our service listening to children 24 hours a day, every day.
