Your Question

Hi having watched a documentary on tv about a gaming app for primary school aged children I am now worried as my 9 year old has an account. How can I close the account or what can I do to make sure he is safe when he’s playing it without being the cruelest parent on the planet

Answer

Hello and welcome

Hi there,

Thanks for contacting Ask Robyn with your question. It makes total sense to feel worried after seeing something concerning on TV. You are not alone, and the fact that you are thinking about this shows you are a caring parent, not a cruel one. Below are some steps you can take so your child can continue enjoying the game while you stay in control.

Check the in game safety settings

Most popular games for children now include safety features such as:

• Restricted or filtered chat

• Options to block or report users

• Friend only communication

• Private account settings

Set up a parent account if the app allows it

Many children’s games now offer features like:

• Parent dashboards

• Activity monitoring

• Play time limits

• Approval controls for friend requests or purchases

These tools can help you supervise in a calm and unobtrusive way.

Use device level controls

Even if the game does not have strong parental controls, your child’s device can help you manage safety.

• On iPhone or iPad you can use Screen Time under Content & Privacy Restrictions

• On Android you can use Google Family Link

These features let you manage:

• App downloads

• In app purchases

• Screen limits

• Age appropriate content

Reassurance for you as a parent

Wanting to protect your child is not being overprotective. Online spaces can be fun, but they can also come with hidden risks. Staying informed and involved is responsible parenting, not cruel parenting.
