Your Question

Hi. My neighbour would leave their 8 year old son at home unattended. Is this suitable?

Answer

Hello and welcome

Hi there, thank you for reaching out to us with your concern. We understand you may be worried about your neighbour’s son being left at home alone.

Legal position in Ireland

In Ireland, there is no specific law that states the exact age at which a child can be left home alone. This is because children mature at different rates. However, parents and carers have a legal duty to ensure that their child is not left in a situation where their safety or welfare could be at risk.

Guidance from Túsla

Túsla recommends that children under the age of 14 should only be left alone for very short periods of time. While some 8 year olds may appear more mature than others, leaving a child of that age unsupervised for long periods would generally not be considered suitable.

What you can do

You have not shared how long this child is left alone for. If the child is being left alone for extended periods, or if you have concerns for their safety or wellbeing, you can contact Túsla through the Duty Social Work team. You can discuss your concern informally or make a formal report. It is possible to remain anonymous if you wish. Details for your local Duty Social Work team can be found here: www.tusla.ie/get-in-touch/duty-social-work-teams/

If you prefer, you can also contact our Support lLne to discuss the situation further. We are available Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm, on 01 522 4300. We will listen to your concerns and can make a report on your behalf if needed.

If you are worried about immediate risk

If you have an immediate concern for the child’s welfare, you can contact your local Gardaí and request a welfare check.

Final thoughts

We hope this information is helpful. When it comes to a child’s safety, it is always best to share concerns with the appropriate services, as you have done today.

Thank you again for expressing your concern for this child. Take care,

Robyn
