Your Question

I’m worried I will never be able to leave my family home as a single mam

Answer

Hello and welcome

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your worry.

You’re not the only one feeling this way

Many single parents feel the same uncertainty when thinking about leaving their family home. It can be hard to imagine managing everything alone, caring for children, paying bills, and finding somewhere affordable to live. Please know these feelings make sense. You’re not alone in this, and so many others are trying to find their way through the same challenges.

The challenge of rising costs

Across Ireland, the shortage of affordable housing and the rising cost of living have made it harder for families to move out or rent their own place. Between rent prices, food, fuel, and childcare, it can feel as though the goal keeps moving further away. It’s important to remember that these challenges aren’t your fault. So much of this situation is about the wider economy, not about how hard you’re trying.

Small steps that can make a difference

Even when it feels stuck, there are things you can do to move forward bit by bit. One step could be checking in with your local council or housing office to see what support is available. Another is to contact organisations such as One Family or Citizens Information, who can guide you on entitlements and benefits. Creating a simple savings plan, even small amounts, can help build confidence. And finally, reaching out for emotional support, whether from a friend or a service like ours, can make a huge difference when things feel heavy.

Taking it one stage at a time

Every family’s journey is different. It can help to think about what you’d like life to look like over the next year and set one small, manageable goal toward that vision. Even tiny steps, like making a phone call or gathering information, are progress. Change often happens slowly, but it does happen, especially when you keep going gently and give yourself credit for every effort you make.
