Steps you can take

A good first step is to raise your concerns with the teacher involved or with the school principal. This can be done in person or in writing. You can explain how the incident affected your child and you as a parent, and clearly state that you do not want your child to be asked to deal with situations like this in the future. It is reasonable to ask for reassurance that this will not happen again and to request clarification on the school’s policy for managing toileting or hygiene incidents.

Keeping the discussion focused on your child’s comfort, wellbeing and safety can help support a constructive and cooperative conversation with the school. Clear communication can also help ensure appropriate procedures are followed going forward.
