Your Question

HI Robin, A teacher made my daughter 7yo to clean poo off the toilet seat. In primary school. With 2 other children. I feel this is not right. Can you advise me how can I prevent this from happening again

Answer

Hello and welcome

Hi, thanks for getting in touch with your question. It is understandable that you felt this situation was not appropriate. When young children are involved, particularly around toileting and hygiene, their dignity, health and emotional wellbeing should be protected at all times. Situations involving bodily waste can be upsetting for children and, in primary schools, these matters are generally expected to be managed by trained adults using appropriate hygiene and safety procedures.

Steps you can take

A good first step is to raise your concerns with the teacher involved or with the school principal. This can be done in person or in writing. You can explain how the incident affected your child and you as a parent, and clearly state that you do not want your child to be asked to deal with situations like this in the future. It is reasonable to ask for reassurance that this will not happen again and to request clarification on the school’s policy for managing toileting or hygiene incidents.

Keeping communication constructive

Keeping the discussion focused on your child’s comfort, wellbeing and safety can help support a constructive and cooperative conversation with the school. Clear communication can also help ensure appropriate procedures are followed going forward.
