Helping Children Navigate Through Homework And Study

Completing homework and studying can be a stressful time of the evening for children, young people and families.

Promoting a healthy diet and supporting your child with a bedtime routine can help to keep them physically, mentally and emotionally well to take on homework and study.

Maintaining an open and positive relationship with your child can help to empower them to discuss any difficulties they may be experiencing with their homework or study. If your child is experiencing difficulties, it can be helpful to communicate this back to their teacher.

Tips on helping your child navigate through homework and study

  • Support your child to develop a homework / study routine at home which is clear and easy for them to understand and follow. Allow time for breaks and snacks.

  • Set up a homework/study-friendly area within the home, with a well-lit area with different supplies within reach such as pencils, erasers and paper. Alternatively check with your school to see if there is a homework club or study group.

  • Keep distractions to a minimum, for example turning the television off during homework/study time.
