How can I support my 15-year-old daughter who is having frequent panic attacks but refuses help?

Hi there, thank you for reaching out to us.

Regarding your query about your 15-year-old daughter, if she is refusing to discuss the concern with you, it may be necessary to give her some space. However, don’t ignore it completely. Leaving a note at her door or sending a text message saying, “I am here if you need to talk,” can often be more effective than approaching her at a time when she isn’t ready to discuss it.

You could also try supporting her by practicing relaxation or breathing techniques together if she is willing to engage. Remember, the topic of anxiety doesn’t need to be discussed during these moments unless she brings it up herself.

If your daughter ever feels like she needs someone to talk to, remember that the Childline team is always there for her. They’re available 24 hours a day, every day, to support her and explore her options with her. She can reach them at 1800 66 66 66 or through Live Chat Online at Childline.ie.

Additionally, the ISPCC offers a free online digital programme for teenagers aged 15–18 who experience anxiety. We also have a free programme for parents of teens with anxiety. It might be worth checking them out at ISPCC.ie/guided-digital-programmes/.

She is never alone, and we’re here for her whenever she needs us.

Take care, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need to talk more. You can contact the ISPCC Support Line Service at 01 5224300. This service is available Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Or you can email to [email protected].

Best wishes,

Alex
