The national child protection charity has welcomed the publication of ‘Roma in Ireland: A National Needs Assessment’ and urged the Government to implement its recommendations without delay.
The assessment conducted by Roma peer researchers, with the assistance of Traveller and Roma support organisation Pavee Point, contains recommendations to be addressed within An Garda Siochana, the Health Service Executive, the Child and Family Agency and others.
ISPCC CEO Grainia Long said: “We welcome the publication of this important report and are shocked by its findings. It is essential that the Government considers this assessment at cabinet level without delay and establishes a Task Force to commence the delivery of recommendations, so the lives of Roma children in Ireland can be improved.
“While the report recognises systemic issues that will take time to resolve, the ISPCC hopes that immediate actions will be taken to alleviate poverty and to encourage and enable access to schooling and health services for Roma children.”
